Selected Project Experience
Single Family & Multi-Family Residential: Selected Projects from the past two decades.
- Marion Green: 918 14th Ave, Seattle, WA 2012 - Present
Our first project as both architect and developer. The project is designed to attract families that might otherwise choose detached single family homes. Five townhouse units clustered around a common courtyard. Three units feature large 3-4 bedroom layouts and two car parking.
- Marion Microhousing: 1219 Marion St. Seattle, WA 2012 - Present
A reinvention of the micro-unit housing archetype. MMh is the first project of its type designed from the ground up around the idea that a communal housing type needs an architecture that builds community among its residents. The main floor of the project is dedicated to a generous commons that feature a community kitchen, laundry, meeting room, workout room, lounge, fireplace, and supported by programming designed to facilitate group events.

A series of townhome projects focusing on the development of new housing archetypes and market niches enabled by Seattle’s new multi-family code. Projects have explored a variety of innovative features, including shared common courtyards, accessory dwelling units, smart-car sized parking garages, and unit sizes both significantly larger and smaller than the market norms. All projects are Built Green 4 star certified.

Two new homes, side-by-side on a shoreline lot about 30-40 feet away from Puget Sound. The backyards facing Puget Sound are one of most beautiful and ever-changing patches of land we've ever worked on. The house designs emphasize open plans, exterior decks, and grading that are well integrated & help to stitch together the interior and exterior living spaces. The need for thoughtful technical detailing is sharpened by the wind driven weather and salt corrosion issues that come along with the marine environment.

Three-unit townhouse, 5-Star Built Green. Howell Lofts had the highest sales/sf of any townhouse project in 2011 or 2012. Completed November 2011.
- Urban Infillers, Various locations, Seattle, WA 2005-present
A series of new contemporary spec homes using the Umbrella House archetype in a variety of locations throughout the city. The homes were typically 20% smaller, 40% more energy efficient, and sold for about 30% more per square foot than conventional spec homes.
- Walsh Hollon Residence, Seattle, WA 2007-present
A new home on a small infill site in Ravenna, the project features an ambitious raft of sustainable features, including a green roof, a paint free exterior, and a geothermal heating & cooling system that uses the earth as a heat exchanger. Every watt of energy used to run the heat pump extracts three watts of heat energy from the earth, effectively tripling the energy efficiency of the building envelope.
- Clawson Allan Residence, Seattle, WA 2006-present
A three townhouse unit in Judkin's Park. The view side unit is designed as a custom home for the owner, while the streetside property contains two small homes for sale on the open market. Parking for all of the homes is located on-site underneath a green roof that forms a common courtyard open space for all of the units.
- Umbrella House One, Seattle, WA 2005
A new home for my family in Seattle's Madrona neighborhood. The process of building and living in the house led to the development of the Umbrella House concept.
- AM Rosen Residence, Seattle, WA 2004
A new contemporary home designed on an urban infill lot on Seattle's Lake Union waterfront. The house stacks a small floor plate four stories high to accommodate a single family home and an artists studio, a universal access design and a steel moment frame that provides sweeping views of the maritime waterfront.
- Weyand Residence, Seattle, WA 2003
A tear-down remodel and addition to an existing home including new bedrooms, a two car garage, and renovation of all the public spaces. The roof, windows and siding were all replaced and the house was converted from a ranch style bungalow to a dramatic contemporary home.
- Pratt Residence, Seattle, WA 2003
A loft style master suite addition to an existing postwar cottage. The new master suite features one large open room with corner glazing on all sides. The bathroom core is held in the center of the loft with hallways and stairs circulating on all sides.
- Conrad Schoeggl Residence, Kirkland, WA 2002.
An addition to a 1920's log cabin on the shore of Lake Washington to adapt the structure from a one room hunting camp into a single family home. The great room of the original cabin is maintained as a living room/dining room, with the rest of the house contained in the addition.
- Adkison Residence, Seattle, WA 2001-2003.
An extensive remodel of a 1940's residence including a new home theater; a new freestanding pavilion with an indoor spa and exercise room; a new underground storage area; new landscape and paving for the entire grounds. The owners call the pavilion their "vacation cabin next door."
- Holman Residence, Seattle WA 2002
A two story addition to an existing 1900 craftsman bungalow to expand the kitchen for a family room, and expand the upstairs for a master suite.
- Rosen Ski Cabin, Silver Springs, WA 1995-1996
A ski cabin near Crystal Mountain. A heavy timber framed roof is supported on double columns that extend outside the exterior skin of the cabin. The signature element of the cabin is an open bridge that connects a freestanding stair to the sleeping loft. Unique interior finishes include recycled fir columns and flooring, recycled rubber flooring, and a custom finished oriented strand board paneling in the bathrooms and bedrooms.
- Guest Cabin, Deming, WA 1993-1998
Guest house for a North Cascades vacation home. A unique hybrid of solid log and conventional stud frame construction was developed to allow construction of a house with a “log cabin” feel along with a free plan that created a courtyard in the rear facing the woods.

- Ryther Campus Renewal, Seattle, WA 2012 - Present
Planning and remodeling of two campus buildings and the campus grounds to facilitate expansion of Ryther’s clinical services wing.

Remodel of an existing storage area to create a multi-purpose classroom for yoga, dance, and physical therapy.
- University of Washington / Cascadia Community College Joint Campus, Bothell, WA 1997-2000
Project Architect for the design and construction of a joint campus for two new educational institutions. Project scope ranged from development of a master plan for the campus through design and construction of several classroom buildings, a library, parking garages, and a central plant. Responsibilities included design of the University of Washington's facility, schematic design of the parking structures and physical plant, technical supervision over the project as a whole, and a two year tenure on-site coordinating the construction effort with the General Contractor.
- Safeco Field, Seattle, WA 1996-1998
Member of core team of (8) architects responsible for site selection, planning, design and construction of a new stadium for the Seattle Mariners. Responsibilities focused on layout of the public spaces and the seating bowl; design and detailing of the masonry and metal cladding systems.
- Westin Hotel. Denver International Airport, Denver, CO 1997
Schematic Design for a new in-terminal hotel for Denver International Airport. Project included preparation of design studies for presentation to the Denver City Council and the DIA board of trustees.

Renovation and restoration of an historic cast stone storefront that had been obscured by the work of several previous tenants.

New grocery store for PCC Natural Foods Grocery. Responsible for schematic design of store exterior and site planning.

- Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Stores, Various Locations 1993
Project Architect. Design of retail outlets for Polo Ralph Lauren in various cities. (Michigan City, IN - Vero Beach, FL - Worchester, MA) Projects ranged from 10,000 to 20,000 sf in size. Each store was designed around a theme that reflected local building traditions.
